Stirling primary’s rugby mentor, Lusindiso Nkomo, has been appointed as the head coach of the Border U13A Craven Week side that will travel to Bloemfontein at the end of the term to compete in the prestigious U13 Craven Week tournament, marking a major milestone in his coaching career.
Nkomo told the Go! on Tuesday it is truly an honour and a humbling experience to be appointed in the role.
“I feel proud and grateful for the opportunity to represent Border Rugby at such a prestigious tournament.
“It is a privilege to work with talented young players and to contribute to their rugby journey at this important stage of their development,” Nkomo said.
He said personally, this appointment is very rewarding because it reflects years of dedication, passion, and commitment to developing young athletes.
“Professionally, it is a significant milestone in my coaching journey and a sign of trust from the rugby community.
“I would also like to acknowledge and appreciate the incredible support from my wife and family, who have stood by me throughout my rugby journey. Their encouragement, sacrifices, and constant belief in me have played a huge role in helping me reach this milestone.”
Nkomo said he believed his passion for youth development, strong work ethic, and commitment to the game played a major role in his selection.
“Over the years, I have always focused on building disciplined, confident, and hardworking players both on and off the field.
“The support from my colleagues, players, parents, and the rugby community has also contributed greatly to this achievement,” Nkomo said.
He said the U13 Craven Week tournament is extremely important because it gives young players the opportunity to compete at a high level while learning valuable life lessons.
“It exposes players to quality competition, teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. For many players, it is also the beginning of bigger rugby opportunities and helps build confidence and character at a young age.
“Supporters and parents can expect a team that will play with pride, passion, discipline, and determination.
“We want to build a side that represents Border Rugby with honour and respect.
“The players will be encouraged to work hard for one another, play positive rugby, and give their best in every match.”
Nkomo said he hopes to instill “discipline, respect, humility, teamwork, and resilience” in the young players.
“Rugby is not only about winning matches, but also about building strong character and preparing young people for life.
“I want the players to understand the importance of hard work, accountability, and supporting one another both on and off the field.”
Nkomo said his journey in rugby has taught him the importance of patience, consistency, and continuous learning.
“Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with different players, coaches, and teams, which has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
“Every experience has shaped my understanding of the game and prepared me to lead young players at this level.
“I would like to sincerely thank the school, parents, players, colleagues, and the entire rugby community for their continued support and encouragement.
“This achievement is not mine alone, but a reflection of the support system around me.
“I appreciate everyone who has believed in me and contributed to my journey. I look forward to representing our community with pride and giving my very best for Border Rugby,” Nkomo said.
