Stirling High rugby talent selected for UK tour, seeks community support

A talented young rugby player from Amalinda, Ovayo Mbiyo, has been selected for the prestigious Southern Cape Sports Tour (SCST) UK tour to England and Scotland, taking place from September 24 to October 3.

Mbiyo, 15, was chosen from approximately 3,000 participants representing leading schools across SA, a selection that reflects his performance, commitment, and potential as a high-level athlete.

The grade 9 Stirling High pupil, who plays U15 rugby and captains his team, described the moment he received the news as both emotional and rewarding.

“The moment I found out I was going to Scotland, I felt proud of myself and happy,” Mbiyo said.

Playing as an inside centre No.12, Mbiyo has developed a strong presence on the field, combining physicality with skill and composure.

“I like this position as I’m gaining metres over the gain line, making important tackles and kicking in pressure moments,” he said.

The young player said the opportunity will allow him to grow both on and off the field by learning from international competition.

“This opportunity means a lot to me as I can gain experience from other players, coaches and players from other countries,” he said.

Mbiyo’s selection follows months of hard work and preparation.

“I have been preparing for this since last year, putting in the effort and time for this dream,” he said.

Mbiyo credited his father, Siphelo, as one of his biggest supporters.

“My father believed in me and taught me the values of the sport,” he said.

Siphelo expressed immense pride in his son’s achievement and development.

“I’m very proud of my son’s achievement,” Siphelo said.

“It means a lot to me, as I always support him in whatever way I can as a parent.”

He said his son’s growth extends beyond rugby.

“He has grown well as a player and as a person, showing discipline in whatever he does when it comes to sport,” Siphelo said.

Looking ahead, Mbiyo is eager to bring back the knowledge he gains on tour to improve his game and contribute to his team.

“I’m most excited about the experience I will be gaining on this tour and coming back to share it with my teammates and improve my game,” he said.

Mbiyo has also set his sights on achieving greatness in the sport.

“My long-term goal is to play for the Sharks and the Springboks and become the most capped Springbok.”

While the opportunity is a significant achievement, it comes with a financial hurdle.

The Mbiyo family must raise approximately R58,000 to cover travel and tour expenses.

“It is very difficult for us to raise that kind of money, so we would like to get sponsorship to make the boy’s dream come true,” Siphelo said.

The family is appealing to the community, local businesses, and potential sponsors to assist in helping Ovayo take this important step in his rugby journey.

Anyone who is willing to assist can contact Siphelo on 082-443-7905.
