Cambridge High’s netball teams delivered a dominant display with a clean sweep of victories against Port Rex Technical High in five fixtures.
Leading the way, the U19A side claimed a hard-fought 22-17 victory, while the U16A team produced one of the performances of the day with an emphatic 21-5 win.
The U15A team continued the winning momentum with a convincing 25-14 triumph, while the U14A side cruised to a 17-3 victory.
The U14B team completed the clean sweep, defeating their Port Rex counterparts 11-3 to cap off a perfect day for Cambridge.
The impressive results highlighted the depth of talent within Cambridge’s netball programme, with every team displaying excellent teamwork, discipline and determination throughout the day’s fixtures.
The school congratulated all the players and coaches on their outstanding performances, praising their commitment and the pride with which they represented Cambridge High.
U16A coach René Stroebel said sticking to the team’s structures and not being drawn into Port Rex’s style of play proved crucial.
“We had to remember just to play our game and stick to the basics, make sure the passes land where they should and not get pulled into the opponents’ game,” said Stroebel.
“The girls really showed up in the second half and executed what we trained for perfectly. They did not give up and played as a team.”
Looking ahead, Stroebel said the clean sweep would give the Cambridge teams confidence for the remainder of the season.
“The clean sweep showed what Cambridge is capable of.
“It’s all about showing up on the day and executing what they have learnt at practise.
“If last weekend is any indication of what these girls are capable of, I have high hopes for the remainder of the season.
“The girls have put in the hard work,” she said.
U15A coach Emmy-Joe du Preez credited her side’s disciplined approach for their convincing victory.
“We had to play our own game, not as fast as our opposition, as we trained certain patterns to get the ball down to the goal post,” said Du Preez.
She said the future of Cambridge netball was bright.
“We have a lot of talented players and I am positive that a number of them will secure a spot in the first-team squad for 2027.”
U14A coach Gugu Nkomo said the team entered the match without the benefit of a training session because of poor weather conditions.
“There wasn’t a key tactic coming into this game due to the fact that we didn’t have any training sessions because of the weather,” said Nkomo.
“We obviously did our homework and knew that going to Port Rex would be challenging, but we stuck to our systems and played the game that we have been playing all season.
“Thanks to Port Rex for the game, and congratulations to my U14A girls for coming back with the win.”
Nkomo said the clean sweep reflected the commitment shown by players and coaches across all age groups.
“To have every team come away with a win against Port Rex is special and says a lot about the effort everyone has been putting in.
“It’s not just about the victories — it’s about seeing the hard work at training paying off across all divisions. Results like these give all the girls a lift and build confidence going forward.
“With two more games to play, the teams definitely needed the kind of start that gives us momentum and something to build on.”
U19A coach Nadine Johnson praised her team’s fighting spirit and commitment to one another.
“Our team has a never-give-up attitude and plays for one another on the court. So, no matter the tactical changes I make as a coach, they give 100% effort until the end,” said Johnson.
“Our next two matches will be quite tough, but as long as the team keeps showing up for each game, plays for one another and keeps fighting until the end, I can only be proud of what they will achieve as a team.”
Du Preez will be representing the senior BCM team that will compete in the SA senior netball championship from August 5 – 11 in Cape Town.
With confidence soaring after an outstanding all-round performance against Port Rex, Cambridge’s netball teams will be looking to carry their winning momentum into the remaining fixtures of the season.
