Iinyathi bowlers too hot to handle as the Dragons wilt

The Eastern Cape Iinyathi put on a clinical bowling display under pressure to successfully defend 151 runs and secure a hard-fought 13-run victory over the North West Dragons in the YesPlay Pro20 Cup at Buffalo Park on Monday.

After being sent in to bat by the Dragons, Iinyathi laid down a solid foundation through steady partnerships, eventually finishing their allotted 20 overs on 151/4.

Jason Niemand anchored the innings with a composed top score of 44 off 32 deliveries, well-supported by Jerome Bossr, who contributed a valuable 33 off 28 balls.

Michael Copeland provided the late innings impetus Iinyathi needed, chipping in with an unbeaten 29 to propel the host side past the 150-run mark.

In response, the North West Dragons’ run chase looked well on track, thanks to a brilliant knock from opener Ludwich Schuld, who blazed his way to 80 off just 51 balls.

Schuld combined effectively with Diego Rosier (33) to place the visitors in a commanding position as the match entered its closing stages.

However, the tide turned dramatically in the 14th over following the dismissal of Rosier.

When Schuld was eventually removed shortly after for 80, Iinyathi seized control of the game, triggering a devastating batting collapse that saw the Dragons lose six wickets for just 46 runs.

Iinyathi’s bowling attack showed tremendous grit in the death overs.

Sithembile Langa took a crucial 3/18 in his four overs, while spinner Kgaudise Molefe produced a match-winning spell of 4/17 to completely dismantle the Dragons’ middle and lower order.

Restricted to 138/9 at the end of their 20 overs, the Dragons fell 13 runs short, handing the EC side another vital win.

The tournament action continued on Tuesday, September 29, with a packed schedule across the country. The CSA High Performance team faced the Tuskers at Tuks Oval at 1pm, followed by the Dafabet Warriors taking on the Wenbro Impalas at the Nelson Mandela University Main Oval at 2pm. The day finished under lights as Boland hosted Flexbrands Knights at Boland Park.
