Mdantsane set to host boxing talent

Young boxing talent from across the Eastern and Western Cape will converge on Mdantsane this weekend for the East Meets West boxing tournament, hosted by the Saxon Ngqayimbana Boxing Academy at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday.

The development tournament starts at 10am, with entry free to the public. Organisers have lined up an action-packed card featuring 40 bouts, involving 80 boxers from Buffalo City, Sarah Baartman, and the Western Cape.

Local Organising Committee (LOC) member, Tera “TK1” Twetwa said the participating regions have selected some of their finest young boxers to compete in the tournament, with male and female athletes across the junior, cadet, youth, and elite divisions scheduled to take to the ring.

Twetwa told the GO! that the tournament was conceptualised as a dedicated collaborative effort between the Western Cape and Buffalo City to put young athletes first and create consistent competitive platforms for emerging talent.

The tournament offers young pugilists an invaluable opportunity to test their skills against competitors from outside their home districts, while gaining vital experience that will benefit their long-term athletic development and career progression.

The event will feature a strong field of rising stars, including SA and Eastern Cape amateur champions, such as Kungawo Mahanjana of Heavy Duty Boxing Club, Asithandile Bangani of Rainbow Boxing Club, and Asive Qubintsika of Young Assassins Boxing Club, fighting under the guidance of former two-time SA champion Sikhulule Sidzumo.

For the organisers, however, the initiative extends far beyond competition in the boxing ring.

Twetwa said sport played a crucial role in offering local youth positive life pathways away from social challenges such as crime and substance abuse.

“We are in a bigger fight against crime and substance abuse,” Twetwa said.

“It is our responsibility to present boxing to young people as a positive option that can change their lives and build their character.”

The LOC as chief organiser, comprises Mdantsane Boxing Organisation chairperson Mbuyiseli Klaas, Thulani Mhlubulwana, Sivuyisile Bopi, Lungiswa Ntontela, and Twetwa.

There will be celebrated boxing figures present at the event, including current WBC world champion Siyakholwa Kuse, Siseko Teyisi, and legend, Welcome Ncitha – who all are expected to attend and inspire the participants.

Twetwa noted that Kuse’s rise to world championship status demonstrated the immense potential of grassroots tournaments in nurturing future champions.

“The likes of Siyakholwa Kuse started in these very tournaments, and once again, future world champions will be showcasing their skills right here in Mdantsane.”

With 40 bouts on the programme and free admission, organisers are encouraging the local community to fill the venue and support the next generation of boxing talent.
