Former Stirling pupil soars in dance of life and studies

FORMER Stirling High School pupil Lauren Volker has achieved an amazing nine distinctions in her 2016 university examinations and will be graduating her third year cum laude.

Volker studies psychology at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and has recently started her honours year in psychology.

“The most challenging part about the psych degree is the work load. It is extremely demanding of your time and in order to do well, you have to be very organised and dedicated,” Volker said.

Her hard work and commitment to her bachelor’s degree have helped her to achieve great academic success.

“One has to set goals to achieve in life. I believe that support from family plays a huge role. I don’t think I could have ever achieved all this without the constant support and love of my wonderful family,” the 22-year-old said.

Volker, however, is more than just an academic, she is also a dance coach and choreographer at the Dare to be Different dance studio in Port Elizabeth.

Starting her dancing career as an eight-year-old with the Tracey Delport Dance Company in East London, Volker has completed elementary modern and senior hip-hop exams, as well as taking part in various shows and competitions. Last year, Volker competed in the Talent Africa National Championships held in Cape Town with Dare to be Different.

“I will be competing again this year in the solo category of the nationals to be held in Port Elizabeth. My goal is to be chosen for the South African team that travels to New York or win the overall competition,” a determined Volker said.

The driven young woman aims to complete a PhD in clinical psychology and one day own her own clinical practice and dance studio.

“I love dance as it can be seen as an outlet for a busy person. Dance is good for the soul.”
