Drum-roll for Lilyfontein

LILYFONTEIN Grade 7 pupil Sibulele Kentane is the first primary school drum majorette girl from the Eastern Cape to receive the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (Samca) colours award.

TOP TEAM: Lilyfontein won the Champion of Champions, as well as overall, at the EC Drum Majorette competition

After competing in the first Eastern Cape Drum Majorette competition in 17 years with her Lilyfontein team, Kentane was presented with the award by the Samca reps present at the event.

The competition was held by Gonubie Primary School on Saturday and saw Gonubie Primary and Lilyfontein battle it out as the Lilyfontein drum majorettes won Champion of Champions and overall.

“The other three teams unfortunately pulled out at the last minute,” Lilyfontein marketing manager Caroline Kruger said.

Kentane, who started out in the flag position or “flaggy” when she was seven years old, is overjoyed.

“I got provincial colours in 2015 and now have SA colours – it’s all so exciting!” an ecstatic Kentane said.

“I love that I get to travel all over the country to compete with my team. It’s also great to be the first primary school drummie in the Eastern Cape to ever get SA colours.”

The trend of local majorette competitions is set to continue this year as the Lilyfontein School will be hosting the first Provincial Majorette Competition to be held in the Eastern Cape in 17 years next month.
