Police have urged people to rather transfer money electronically or swipe their bank cards instead of drawing cash from ATMs, following two robberies in Uitenhage at the weekend.
Police spokesman Captain Gerda Swart said the latest incident happened in Dunjwa Street, KwaNobuhle, at about 11.30am on Saturday.
“Two men, one with a firearm, threatened a man shortly after returning home from withdrawing a substantial amount of money at an ATM,” she said.
“The men knew his whereabouts and followed him home. They demanded the money and his cellphone before fleeing in a vehicle.”
In a separate attack, a 38-year-old man’s car was taken from him at his house in Bucwa Street, KwaNobuhle, at about 1am on Saturday.
“Three suspects – one armed with a firearm – appeared in the driveway and threatened the owner and his wife,” Swart said.
“They forced them out the car and sped off in it. An undisclosed amount of cash was also in the car.
“The vehicle was found abandoned less than an hour after the robbery.”
