‘Extra-special’ legends heritage tournament on cards

SPORT fanatics from King William’s Town and surrounding areas will be entertained with a fun- filled day at the fifth annual Africans Sport Club Legends Heritage Tournament.

The tournament will be held at the Breidbach Sports Grounds on September 23.

Africans public relations officer Sean Carelse said this year’s tournament coincided with their mother-body’s 90th anniversary.

“We want to make it extra-special … rugby, football and netball will be accommodated during the event, which promises to be filled with lots of fun for the whole community,” Carelse said.

Since they regrouped as former players in 2012, Carelse said they had gone from strength to strength and managed to stage some memorable, community-orientated events.

“What we want to achieve this year is to relive the great sporting atmosphere that used to attract great teams such as Eldoronians [Johannesburg], Gardens [Port Elizabeth], Eersterus [Pretoria] and players who used to compete fiercely with our local teams during tournaments; the likes of Rubberhides, Shamrocks, St Joseph’s Old Boys and Africans.”

Carelse said sports enthusiasts had always supported the event.

“We receive overwhelming support from the entire King community and this has motivated us to keep on staging this event,” Carelse said.

“The Africans Alumnae is proud to be part of a club with such a rich history and this reunion with former teammates will be extra-special.”

He added that a donation would be offered to one of the local schools as part of their way to plough back to the community.

“This is to assist with rugby development at school level,” Carelse said.

Cricket South Africa president and Africans Sports Club legend Chris Nenzani and former Springbok and Rubberhides great Tommy Esterhuizen will be among the special guests who will attend the event.
