THE Gonubie Round Table Charity Bed Race at the East London Race track on Saturday raised a whopping R50000 for various local charities.

The rainy day was nonetheless a fun family affair as 15 teams, two of which were from Lilyfontein School, battled it out for the Bed Race Champion title.
NTT Volkswagen took first place with Audi and NSRI coming in second and third respectively.
“We would really like more schools to become involved in this event as it really is a wonderful family day and it’s an extremely unique and entertaining way to help the community,” Bed Race organiser Dean Starbuck said.
Beneficiaries of the day’s proceeds included NSRI, Angels Outreach Project for Children’s Homes and the East London Bikers Church.
The event requires sponsors to sponsor a hospital bed, decorate it and then have a team of five, consisting of four runners and one ‘patient’ to race the bed around the track with various obstacles along the way.
Already preparing for next year’s event, Gonubie Round Table are hoping to turn this into a huge annual event.
“We’re hoping to get at least 30 beds next year, but we need support from the people of East London,” Starbuck said.
“A huge thank you goes to everyone who made this event possible this year, especially to our main sponsor, Buco.”
After the race, the hospital beds are restored and donated to needy charities.
This year, Gonubie Round Table are still looking for charities and clinics in need of hospital beds.
