At 3:30pm, Thursday December 6, NSRI East London duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at Eastern Beach.

The sea rescue craft Lotto Rescue Runner was launched and responded alongside NSRI rescue swimmers, the SA Police Services K-9 Search and Rescue, Aldersons ambulance service and BCM (Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality) Fire and Rescue Services.

On arrival, a search commenced for two men – one aged 25 and one whose age is unknown – who went missing in the surf after getting into difficulties while swimming.

Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, no sign of the two men has been found and Police K-9 Search and Rescue and a Police Dive Unit will continue in an ongoing search operation.

Police have opened an investigation.
