A vicious tornado ripped open roofs, flattened walls and severely damaged 26 schools in the Eastern Cape last weekend.
The majority of these schools are in the OR Tambo Coastal education district.
The damage ranges from flattened toilets to entire roofs being blown off. A team from the infrastructure section of the department of education (DoE) has been sent to assess the extent of damage in all the affected schools, said Eastern Cape education department spokesman Malibongwe Mtima.

- Phambili
- Ntanzi
- St Denis Xhaka
- Esidwasweni
The department has urged all district directors and officials, including principals, to report any damages incurred by schools due to these tornado.
