More than 1,000 people from all over the country flocked to Zwelitsha Township Stadium recently to attend the 5th fifth annual gathering of local non-profit organisation (NPO) Buyelekasi Zwelitsha Reunion.
Buyelekasi Zwelitsha Reunion is a voluntary community-based organizsation founded in 2014 to facilitate and promote the revitaliszation of Zwelitsha Ttownship. It works to mobilizse community development initiatives through extensive public participation, empowerment programmes, resources mobilisation and effective co-ordination.
The event was held annually in order to “mobilise stakeholders that have an interest in the development of Zwelitsha Ttownship,” said spokesperson Mzimkhulu Makopo.
Throughout the reunion, attendees could watch a number of local sporting teams from different sport codes go head to head. Sports playedtaking part included netball, soccer, and boxing, chess and darts.
A golf day was also organised, as well as a 5km fun run. Jumping castles were also available to keep the children entertained.
According to Makopo, the event was organised by Zwelitsha locals with the Local Organiszing Committee being made up of professionals born in the township.
A highlight of the reunion was the various boxing competitions organised in collaboration with former International Boxing Federation (IBF) world champion Welcome Ncita and current world bantam weight champion Zolani Tete.
“We are launching a new strategy for community development, which will focus on sports, arts, culture, education and training and local economic development,” said Makopo.
