First tie in history of marathon
BORDER Athletics stayed true to their promise of gifting winning schools with a voucher on Thursday after their participation in the 2018 Legends Marathon.
AW Barnes and Beaconhurst Primary Schools both tied with the highest number of entrants in the 5km fun walk.
The Legends Marathon, held which takes place annually in October, is the club’is the flagship meet of the clubs flagship event, which and was first held started in 2013. Border Athletics office manager Daan Louw said they added the 5km fun run in 2014 to cater for schools.
“It has been improving in numbers each year and we’ve been giving a prize for the most entries. It’s the first time having a tie so we split the prize,” Louw said.

The marathon consists of an ultra- distance 68km, a 21.1km, 10km and a 5km fun run. The ultra marathon starts from Bhisho and ends in East London.
AW Barnes master of sport Jason Van Zyl and head of cross country at Beaconhurst Angelique Norton were there to accept the gift of vouchers to the value of R500 each, sponsored by PnA Stationers.
“Thank you for giving back into our different communities and giving our kids a chance to be involved in sport,” said Van Zyl said.
“We thank all schools for their participation, it is really appreciatedfrom the Border Athletics side,” Louw said.
