Department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (Dsrac) MEC Bulelwa Tunyiswa handed over sports equipment to 22 Buffalo City Municipality (BCM) sport clubs and 11 Duncan Village football clubs on Sunday during the Duncan Village LFA Top 8 tournament.

The sports equipment is for codes including rugby, boxing, table tennis, football, netball and cricket, all amounting to the value of R385,967.

Tunyiswa said the community of Duncan Village faced challenges including lack of resources, especially for sporting equipment.

“The 22 BCM local clubs were identified from 10 local leagues in the various sporting codes. The department supports these local leagues with basic training and match preparation equipment to allow them to perform better as a league and develop their sporting codes,” said Tunyiswa.

She said handing over of sports equipment was part of the department’s man- date of sports development in the province, especially to previously disadvantaged communities.

“The Eastern Cape community loves sport – it gives them pleasure and helps them to define themselves and their communities,” she said.
