The second Real Gijimas 50km road race from Zwelitsha to Mdantsane will take place tomorrow.
The race comes at time when thousands of runners nationwide are focusing efforts on the Two Oceans over 56km and Comrades Marathon.
Real Gijimas have confirmed they have received interest from runners across the country to participate in the race, in their race from across the country, with the latest commitment coming from the Nedbank Club based in KwaZulu-Natal.
Real Gijimas chair, Alex Kambule, has indicated that they were hoping for a field of 350 participants this year.
Among local runners who have the potential to earn a podium place are Nedbank’s Nkosinathi Nzingo and Xolisile Sinkintana, Mzwaele Gqotile of Eskom, Mbuyusile Mema of Old Mutual, Xolisile Mashicila of Overtakers, last year’s third placed Siyabulela Madlavana from Easy Equities Born 2 Run, Mabula Zuko of Qolokweni AC and the Oxford Striders duo of Peter Chiwaya and Mndeni Zulu.
“The course is a tough one though there is an overall drop in altitude from the Zwelitsha start to the finish in Mdantsane, and that alone will encourage runners to chase the clock,” said Kambule.
Many of the local Comrades hopefuls will line up at the start, while also expected to be in the field are runners who have never before run further than the 42.2km of a standard marathon.
Late entries, registration and race number collection will take place today at the Beacon Bay Country Club at 1pm to 6pm and 10am to 2pm, and at Mdantsane Masizakhe Children’s Home at 2pm to 6pm and 11am to 6pm.
