A “super” performance by Breidbach -based team Super Stars in the Swaraj FC 41stth Anniversary Mujahid Marais Memorial Tournament saw them walk away with the tournament’s first-ever U10 category trophy.
A total of 16 senior and 12 juniors teams participated in the three-day tournament at the North End Stadium in East London.
Super Stars kept an unbeaten run after winning 1-0 against Atletico in their opening game and drew 1-1 in their final group match against hosts Swaraj to top the standings of their pool.
Coach Willy Bester’s charges met Atlantic Spurs in the quarterfinals and raised eyebrows after their 5-0 victory, followed by a goalless draw against Leeds in the semifinals which saw them winning 2-1 after a penalty shootout.
A first-half goal in the finals by striker Willy-Handro Bester, followed by another goal by midfielder Cee-Jay Rankwana in the second half, secured a 2-0 victory against Central United.
For their efforts, the team was rewarded with the winning trophy plus soccer gear.
Two of their players, Rankwana and Damian Jackson, were named top scorers of the tournament after scoring four goals each.
“The tournament was well-organised and the competition was tough. I have to commend my players for sticking to their game plan and for keeping their discipline on and off the field,” said Bester.
Team manager Glynnice Bester was grateful for the overwhelming support coming from the entire community throughout the tournament.
“We are grateful for coaches, managers and supporters of other local clubs for attending the tournament and for giving support – also to Jowha Technologies director Jody Botha and other individuals for assisting with transport,” said Glynnice.
