Sole Destroyer is for all

Enthusiastic runners are encouraged to join in the 27th annual Caltex Sole Destroyer race on September 14 and 15, hosted by the Oxford Striders Running Club.

Three races form part of the event, namely the titular 21km Sole Destroyer, the 9km Klinkhardt Sole Teaser and the 5km Caltex Little Sole.

The Caltex Little Sole 5km race, for children under 14 years of age, and takes place on September 14, starting and ending at Oxford Striders, from 2pm.

Very young runners may be accompanied by an adult and all finishers will receive a medal.

Entry is R50 per person and no temporary licence is required.

The 21km route starts at 6.30am on Smithfield Street in Cambridge, near the Highgate Hotel, and finishes at Oxford Striders.

The first half of the route is along dirt roads through farm areas, with many testing hill climbs, including the daunting Heart Break Hill at the 7.5km mark.

At 12.5km, runners can expect a steep descent followed by a flat and fast section through the city’s suburbs until reaching the last assent up Willasdale Road at 18km.

Entrants pay R130 for the race, including R30 for a temporary licence.

Klinkhardt Charted Accountants have come on board in 2019 to sponsor the Sole Teaser 9km race. The race starts and finishes at Oxford Striders from 7am, with a and will have a tough route along Batting Hill and Willasdale Drive.

Entry is R90 including a R20 temporary licence.

The Sole Destroyer is named after well-known East London athlete Chris Sole who used the Horseshoe Valley as his training ground. Runners One can enter or collect timing chips at Oxford Striders at the following times:

  • Saturday September 7 from 9-12pm

  • Thursday September 12 and Friday September 13 from 5-7pm

  • Saturday September 14, 10am-1pm
