Dangerous Lies is the latest thriller to be released under the Netflix Originals label and is almost a complete opposite of last week’s choice.
Where Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was meticulously crafted spy thriller that was planned down to the smallest detail, Lies is a more casual affair that relies rather on big reveals even if they don’t make much sense.
Also unlike Tinker, Lies is actually fun to watch.
We follow Katie Franklin (Camila Mendes), a struggling wife who works as a caretaker for the wealthy Leonard Wellesley (Elliot Gould). One day, Wellesley mysteriously dies and leaves everything to Franklin in his will.
This lucky coincidence draws the attention of Detective Chesler (Sasha Alexander) and the rest of the film is spent trying to unravel the many layers of mystery involved.
As far as thrillers go, Lies certainly isn’t the cleverest. A lot of the ‘twists’ feel forced and it’s full of well-worn cliches, including the overly pretentious title.
At the same time, it’s fast-paced enough that you won’t even notice and dumb as it is, it’s still pretty exciting to watch.
While you might not end up watching it more than once, while it’s running Dangerous Lies is entertaining.
