Selborne Primary grade 6 pupil Adam de Lange, 12, recently travelled to Weiden, Germany to take part in the UIPM Biathle/Triathle World Championships which will run until August 30.
He will be competing in the Biathle and Triathle individual and mixed relay events.
This year will mark his third time attending the World Championships, the first time being in 2018 in Egypt and then in 2019 in the USA.
“I started training for biathle about five years ago, so in grade 2,” de Lange said.
“A fellow Selbornian, Daniel Breetzke, was doing biathle at a time when I was really into my running and I looked up to Daniel, and was excited to follow him going to compete in the World Championships in Sarasota, Florida [2016 championships].
“Daniel actually won the World Championships that year. This motivated me to start biathle.”
While de Lange will be competing as an individual, he will be joining other athletes from South Africa during the mixed relays event.
“As parents we are extremely proud of his achievements as it is a huge honour to compete at this level,” said mother Bianca Coates.
“His determination and hard work throughout the past year and a half has certainly paid off and he is super excited to visit a new country and do his absolute best.”
