The GO! & Express is offering one lucky winner a set of double tickets to see the Cape Town Opera’s performance of La Bohème at the Guild Theatre on September 9.

La Bohème, written by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini and first premièring in February 1896, is based on the 1851 book Scenes of Bohemian Life by French author Henri Murger.

The opera follows the life of a poor seamstress and her artist friends.

The Cape Town Opera’s performance is directed by Magdalene Minnaar and stars Zandile Mzazi as the seamstress Mimi and Lukhanyo Moyoke as her poet friend Rodolfo.

Minnaar had previously directed La Bohème in 2019, for a festival in Nelspruit.

“Given that we only have three weeks for rehearsals, it’s just as well I’m so familiar with this work,” she said.

“I’m not a fan of Puccini per se, but in La Bohème the perfect symbiosis of music and words gives it an organic cohesion that is amazing.

“It’s a relatable story told with the attention to detail you usually only find in films.”

Minnaar said her version of the opera was a combination of traditional operatic and contemporary elements.

“The characters are paramount, so vibrant that instead of having them subordinate to the set and costumes I’ve put it the other way around, so that the setting supports the characters; this version of La Bohème is set in a township in a dystopian South Africa,” she said.

East London is the first stop on a tour that will take the opera to theatres in Gqeberha, Graaff-Reinet and Oudtshoorn.

It will run in the Guild from September 8 to 9.
