After the widespread success of his previous two movies, Get Out (2017) and Us (2019), the expectations for Jordan Peele’s latest offering, Nope, are high.
Luckily, Peele’s brilliant storytelling and knack for foreshadowing and hidden meanings have proven to be a winning formula once again.
Peele wrote, directed, and co-produced the film and has even described it as his “most ambitious film yet”.
Nope is an original story about UFOs that follows two siblings, OJ Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer), who is left in charge of their father’s ranch after his mysterious passing.
They soon realize their father’s death was caused by objects that fell from the sky from a UFO.
Down on their luck and struggling to keep the ranch afloat, the brother and sister aim to go viral by capturing the phenomenon on video with the help of a tech salesman named Angel Torres (Brandon Perea) and filmmaker Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott).
The film once again puts Peele’s keen eye for stunning cinematography at the forefront in addition to a perfect musical score.
The runtime is a bit extensive, and one needs to pay extra attention to understand certain aspects of the film, which means that just like his previous work, Nope requires a second and third viewing to truly appreciate the many hidden meanings and Easter eggs throughout the film.
Palmer and Kaluuya are pleasing to watch, with Palmer bringing much-needed humour to the otherwise chilling atmosphere of the film.
The movie explores many themes including the lengths people go to fulfill their ambitions.
