Netball star selected for Border U18 squad

THANDOLWETHU NELE

Cambridge High School netball player Thandolwethu Nele was recently selected to play for the Eastern Cape Border U18 netball squad.

Nele, who is in grade 12, has been playing netball since she was in grade 2.

She was encouraged by her coaches at school to try out for the Border netball squad.

“My coaches motivated me to attend the trials, and with their input and motivation and my hard work, I was selected for the squad,” she said.

“This achievement opens potential opportunities to play for the netball team at the university I will be attending next year. My team is my family.

“They are like sisters to me. I love to play with them and love playing for my school. We train twice a week at school, and I do fitness training at home,” Nele said.

With this being her final year playing netball at high school, Nele shared some words of advice for her the younger players who will one day follow in her footsteps. “Keep on practicing, as practice makes perfect. Always listen to your coach’s advice and keep on pushing and improving yourself,” Nele said.

The talented athlete has highlighted playing for the Australian netball team, the Melbourne Vixens, as a goal that she would like to work towards.

Nele’s netball coach at the school, Nadine Johnson, spoke very highly of her and believes that she deserves this opportunity.

“Thando is a very committed and well-disciplined athlete.

“She is always striving to do better in each match and sets a high standard for herself in her goal averages.

“I think this opportunity will just give her more experience and knowledge of the game. This will also boost her confidence,” Johnson said.
