Bellavides Private School teacher, Clarissa Masola, has made it her mission to give back to the Furry Godmother by walking 100km in five days in September.

The money will be raised through public pledges of R1 per kilometre or R10 per kilometre and all funds will go towards the purchasing of food for cats and dogs at local NPO, The Furry Godmother.

Founded and run by Tessa van Heerden, the Furry Godmother takes care of stray, neglected and abused animals in impoverished areas around East London.

Masola first learned of Van Heerden through Bellavides and after working with her for three years, Masola said she was inspired by Van Heerden’s selfless work in animal welfare.

Masola said: “Every donation goes directly to the cause. As I have become more involved, I am made aware of how great the need is.

“To feed all of these animals in a week cost well over R10,000 and that does not include medical bills and sterilisation. There are no sponsors to assist.”

Masola’s walk will start from Nieu-Bethesda, doing a circular route around the area

Van Heerden expressed her gratitude for the initiative and believed it would go along way towards reinvigorating dwindling support for local animal welfare.

“I am so grateful for everything Clarissa has done.

“She is a tremendous support, her investment in animal welfare is amazing.

“She has even assisted in homing some of the animals.

“The money will be a great help because it will provide food, the veterinary needs and all the costs with the animal welfare work that we do,” Van Heerden said.
