This week we chat to Denver Esben, owner and CEO of Siyasebenza Plumbing about what it takes to be a good plumber in East London.

What services do you offer?

We do maintenance and construction plumbing, bathroom renovations, unblocking of sewer and stormwater drainage, installation of geysers, repairs to leaking taps, and repairs to leaking toilets. I also remove and install new taps, and I handle the installation of gutters.

When did your business start?

2017

What experience does one need to become a plumber?

If you want to become a plumber, you have to do an apprenticeship for five years at a registered company. Then you must do a practical and theory test, then you will be a qualified plumber. There is also the option of studying further and becoming a master plumber.

How many people do you work with?

My team is very small. I work with three guys, and I have trained all of them myself. If I become bigger, I will train more.

What satisfaction do you get out of doing the work that you do?

I get satisfaction doing what I do because I am helping people with their plumbing. I’m glad I do this because I make a difference, I help people to not have plumbing problems.

What do you think makes your business stand out from other similar businesses in the area?

My business stands out because I go the extra mile. I also offer 24/7 service so people can call me at night or at weekends. I do my service with a smile, and I have good manners.

What are some of the goals that you are currently working towards?

I hope to one day have a bigger team. I want more guys to train. I would also like to own more bakkies.

The more work I get, the better it will be for me.

What advice do you have for anyone interested in starting their own business?

You must have heart; you must be able to fall and rise. Don’t give up. You must love plumbing, that’s the secret.

Get your plumbing licence and don’t be lazy.

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?

Plumbing is a nice job to do, especially now, for the youth struggling with high levels of unemployment. You just have to learn to have the heart for it.
