The Dramatic Society of East London (Dramsoc) is gearing up for its annual musical production, Showstopper, at the Alexander Playhouse.
The theme, Jukebox!, is inspired by the 1950s and ‘60s and it includes well-known, classic rock and roll, jazz and Motown tunes that will have audiences singing along all night.
Director Jo Stemmet said:
“Showstoppers is made by music lovers, for music lovers. The 1950s and ‘60s is where most modern music began. We have music that people grew up listening to and don’t get to hear all the time these days,” Stemmet said.
The cast and crew is made up of about 40 passionate individuals, aged 16-70. While some of the young members aren’t necessarily familiar with the music, they have grown to love and appreciate the music during rehearsals.
Another part of the experience will be a tuck-shop that will sell food and snacks reminiscent of the era. Guests are invited to dress up, as the show will be immersive and interactive.
The proceeds of the show will go into assisting the Alexandra Playhouse with monthly upkeep.
One of the performers, Felix Lindemann, said that the opportunity was a dream come true.
“My heart has always wanted to perform on a stage, but I always thought I wasn’t good enough. This show is like nothing I’ve done before. The hits stay in your mind long after practice is over, and it keeps you wanting more. The excitement is building, the nerves are real but when the lights go on, it’s truly going to be epic! I truly hope the audience is going to have as much fun as we’ve all had putting it together,” Lindemann said.
The show will take place from Wednesday December 4 to Saturday December 7 and then again from Wednesday December 11 to Saturday, December 14. Tickets are R120 per person. Contact alexanderplayhouse1952@gmail.com or 061-504-1020.
