Hair salon a cut above for its young back-to-school clients

This week, we chat to two local businesses that cater for back-to-school needs. Sonja Botha, who runs her own hair salon, Hair by Sons, offers great back-to-school deals.

What products/services do you offer?

I do blow-drying, highlights, full colours, ombre, balayage, botox and Brazilian hair treatments. We also sell various products in the salon and there’s also a full-time barber.

When and how did you start your business?

My first entrepreneurship venture was a salon that I launched with my former business partner Andy Brown in 2019 which proved highly successful, but unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic we were forced to close and go our separate ways.

Where and how did you learn your hairdressing skills?

I completed a variety of courses in hair and hair products at Matrix and Beauty Academy.

Additionally, I was a student of Dre Rooi, who served as my mentor for more than 10 years.

How many people do you work with?

There are two of us that work in the salon, myself and Gino the barber, who is also my new business partner.

He is responsible for all gentlemen’s haircuts and possesses more than 40 years of experience in the industry.

On busy days, I am assisted by my assistant, Tiyana Marais, who has been with me for five years and is eager to expand her knowledge of hair and is extremely passionate about her work.

What sets you apart from other similar businesses in the area?

What sets us apart is our professionalism, welcoming atmosphere, and loyal customer base.

We focus on providing exceptional service in a friendly environment, which has helped us build lasting relationships with our customers.

With the back-to-school season in full swing, what are some of the special deals you are running to help parents and pupils?

I’m excited to offer a special deal for schoolgirls, including a wash treatment, blow-dry, and trim, all for just R200.

What are some of the challenges you have faced and how did you overcome them?

This industry is characterised by intense competition and occasionally demanding clients, but the key to success lies in determination, resilience, and perseverance.

What proud moments have your celebrated in your business so far?

I had several proud moments, but what stands out the most is doing the hair for the runway models for the bridal fair at Hemingways for two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019.

And it was also a great honour to be the stylist for the Delaney sisters, who won 2024 SA Gospel Recognition Awards.

What are some of your goals for 2025?

In 2025, I aim to pioneer innovative solutions and foster deeply rewarding, long-lasting partnerships with my clients, while growing this business to greater heights.

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in starting a similar line of business?

Pursue your aspirations with unwavering passion and confidence in your abilities.

Embracing your dreams and taking bold action will unlock your full potential and reveal new possibilities.
