Former Falcon adapts well to role as Captain America

GENRE: Adventure, action

Captain America: Brave New World is the much anticipated 35th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that fans have been waiting for.

When Captain Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) handed over the shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), the future of Captain America has been an uncertain plot point.

Following the events of the series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2019), Wilson has fully embraced his title as the new Captain America.

He soon gets summoned to the White House as the new president Thadeus Ross (Harrison Ford) wants to work with him on rebuilding the Avengers.

But trouble ensues when Wilson’s friend Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) uncontrollably tries to assassinate the president and is framed for the attempt. Wilson and his partner Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez) must race against time to uncover the true culprit and foil an evil plot that unwittingly involves Ross. The film also introduces a key Marvel character, the Red Hulk.

With so much interest in Mackie’s official debut as the new Captain America, the expectations were high.

Mackie does an okay job in the role. He is missing a lot of his humour and charisma that made him such a lovable character as Falcon, but that could be explained by the stress that his character is going through.

He is faced with constant comparisons to Rogers and a fair amount of racism. His choice to not take the serum affects his physical abilities to fight, but his determination, and love for his country and people make him a worthy superhero.

Ford’s introduction to the MCU is a worthy one. Fans of the comic books will appreciate his portrayal of the Red Hulk, which is reminiscent of The Incredible Hulk.

The surprise cameo made by Sebastian Stan in his role as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier was one of the best moments of the film.

The action scenes are enjoyable, even with all the CGI effects. Wilson’s fighting movements are a pleasure to watch, and it is fun to watch how he uses The Shield in fights.

While the storyline leaves a lot to be desired, the action and many callbacks to previous MCU shows and movies make it a must watch for Marvel fans.

Captain America: Brave New World is now showing at Hemingways Movies.
