Smart strategies for success and wellbeing during exam season

Exams can feel overwhelming, but they don’t have to be. With the right mindset and strategy, you can turn this season into an opportunity for growth and confidence. As a counsellor, I’ve seen many pupils struggle, but I’ve also witnessed how simple, intentional actions can transform their approach.

Here’s how you can set yourself up for success as you prepare for important exams this year especially during the June and December periods.

1. Create a study plan that works for you

A solid study plan helps you stay organised and reduces last-minute cramming.

Here’s how to build one:

Start early: Break your modules into smaller sections and assign specific topics to each day.

Prioritise challenging subjects: Spend more time on areas where you need improvement.

Use active learning techniques: Instead of just reading, try explaining concepts to a friend, using flashcards, or creating mind maps.

2. Manage stress with healthy habits

Your brain functions best when your body is well taken care of.

Stay hydrated and eat brain-boosting foods like nuts, fruits, and leafy greens.

Get enough sleep. Pulling all-nighters might seem productive, but they hurt your focus and memory.

Move your body. Take short walks, stretch, or exercise to keep stress levels in check.

3. Use social media to your advantage

Instead of letting social media be a distraction, turn it into a powerful tool for learning:

Follow educational accounts: Platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have great content creators who simplify complex topics.

Join study groups: Connect with classmates online to discuss difficult subjects and share resources.

Use timers: Apps like Forest or Pomodoro timers help keep you focused while studying.

4. Train your mind

Your mindset plays a crucial role in how you perform.

Practise mindfulness: Deep breathing and meditation can calm your nerves.

Affirm yourself: Replace negative thoughts with statements like, “I am prepared. I can do this.”

Visualise success: Imagine yourself confidently answering questions and finishing the exam with ease.

5. Know When to Take a Break

Follow the 50/10 rule: Study for 50 minutes, then take a 10-minute break.

Do something refreshing: Listen to music, step outside, or doodle.

Laugh: Watching something funny can reduce stress and lighten the mood.

Your worth is not determined by a test score. Exams are important, but so is your mental wellbeing. Do your best and remember you’ve got this!
