Beloved teacher returns to Crewe Primary as new headmaster

Selborne College has bid a bittersweet farewell to one of its most respected teachers, Neill Erasmus, who has been appointed as the new principal of Crewe Primary School.

Erasmus began his journey at Selborne in July 2008, where he headed the Afrikaans department, soon rising through the ranks to become deputy headmaster in 2021.

He became known for his commitment to both academics and sport, coaching both rugby and cricket teams.

Crewe Primary School is a familiar place for Erasmus, as he taught at the school for six-and-a-half years, earlier in his career.

He describes the appointment as a true honour and a dream come true.

“Becoming principal of Crewe has long been a personal goal.

“Although I had often expressed a desire to one day become the principal of Crewe Primary, I was filled with mixed emotions when it was confirmed that I had been recommended for the post.

“I was truly humbled and honoured, yet aware of the great responsibility that lay ahead.

“At the same time, I felt an immense sense of excitement about returning to Crewe,” Erasmus said.

The experienced teacher has cemented himself as someone known for prioritising a strong emphasis on mutual respect, discipline, and a solid work ethic.

Erasmus plans to focus on restoring Crewe to the top through foundational values.

“My educational philosophy centres on the holistic development of every pupil.

“Children should be nurtured to grow in all areas; academically, emotionally, socially, and physically, to become the best versions of themselves.

“This journey must be supported by parents, teachers and the broader community,” he said.

Reflecting on his Selborne years, Erasmus credits mentors such as Sammy Gunn and Andrew Dewar for preparing him for leadership.

Erasmus’s lasting impact has been evident through the hundreds of posts on social media made by many of his past pupils.

“Very sad to see such an awesome teacher leave. As he was an absolute inspiration in my matric year to me and the passion he always had for us as students was second to none. Crewe is gaining such an asset. Well done sir on this new chapter. You will do great things at that school,” Matthew Croney wrote.

“Massive congratulations to you, Mr Neill Erasmus. It has been a great honour to have you as my teacher and my son’s teacher. You’re the reason he loves and excels in Afrikaans. You’ve laid a strong foundation for our boys. It’s time for you to make those little ones at Crewe primary just as proud, thank you sir,” Aakifah Marais posted.

In a statement on the school’s Facebook page, Selborne College shared some kind words and well wishes for Erasmus as he embarks on his new journey.

“It is with mixed emotions that we bid farewell to a highly respected and accomplished schoolmaster.

“His professionalism, integrity, and dedication will leave a lasting impact on the Selborne College community.

“Crewe Primary School is fortunate to welcome Mr Erasmus as their new principal.

“We extend our heartfelt best wishes to him, his family and the Crewe Primary community for continued success in the years ahead.”
