At just 32 years old, Siyabonga Dingiswayo from Mdantsane has built a growing baking business from his home kitchen. His passion, perseverance, and community support have helped shape Cake Me Up Somdingi into a name people trust and love. We sat down with Siyabonga to learn more about his journey and future.
What inspired you to start your baking business?
I grew up in a business-oriented family — my mother was a baker, so I naturally picked up the skills. There was a time when she had to travel to Cape Town, and an order came in while she was away. She called and asked me to handle it. That experience changed everything for me. I’ve been baking ever since. I was also inspired by Buddy Valastro — I used to watch his baking shows all the time.
When and how did you officially start your business?
In 2018, my contract with the department of environmental affairs ended. I moved back home, and a friend encouraged me to take baking seriously and start promoting my work on social media. I took the advice, and in 2019, Cake Me Up Somdingi was born.
Do you work alone?
Most of the time, yes. However, when orders pile up, I ask my family and close friends to help out. I’m grateful for their support.
Do you have a signature cake that keeps customers coming back?
My red velvet, chocolate, and carrot cakes are customer favourites — they’re the most requested.
How has the community supported your business?
The support has been overwhelming. I’m surrounded by an amazing community, family, and friends who always uplift me. I can see the impact through frequent referrals and returning customers. A highlight for me was being nominated by Umhlobo Wenene FM to showcase my cake designs for their birthday celebration — and I won the competition!
What are your top three favourite things to bake?
Red velvet, chocolate, and carrot cakes. They’re not just popular — I enjoy making them the most.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
One of my biggest challenges is managing high volumes of orders — I find it hard to turn customers away. I used to allow clients to pay a 50% deposit and the rest on collection, but I’ve been scammed a few times. I’ve since learned to tighten my payment policy and trust my instincts.
What are your dreams for the future of your business?
My goal is to own two successful bakeries — right now I’m operating from home. I want to grow the brand and expand nationwide, making Cake Me Up Somdingi a well-known name across SA.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. Know your numbers — understand your costs and profits. Focus on quality over quantity and use social media effectively to market your work. It’s a powerful tool.
