A place of safety for some of the most vulnerable children in the community is facing imminent closure unless urgent support is secured.
Guardians of Hope, a registered non-profit organisation founded in 2024, has launched an emergency fundraising campaign titled “2000 Hearts of Hope” in response to a severe financial crisis threatening its operations beyond April.
The organisation provides full-time care for vulnerable, abandoned, and medically fragile children. However, with no government funding and a sharp decline in corporate donations, its future now hangs in the balance.
Founder Elaine Brenkman described the situation to the Go! on Wednesday as “critical”.
“This is a moment where community action will determine what happens next,” she said.
“We are asking the public to stand with us and help secure a future for the children who depend on our care every single day.”
The campaign is calling on 2,000 people to commit to a monthly debit order of at least R150.
Collectively, this would provide financial stability and ensure the continuation of essential services, including daily care, medical treatment, therapeutic interventions, and safe housing.
Chairperson Bonnie Currin said the NPO had explored multiple fundraising avenues, having to operate without any state financial assistance.
“This lack of state support has placed us in a precarious position, despite ongoing fundraising initiatives and efforts to secure private donations.
“We understand there are many charities in need, which is why we are asking for such a small contribution, because together, small acts can make a big difference,” she said.
The department of social services has been informed of the potential closure, which would require urgent alternative placement arrangements for the children currently in care.
Despite the challenges, Guardians of Hope remains committed to protecting and nurturing vulnerable children. Its guiding motto reflects its mission: “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” — Helen Keller
Members of the public are encouraged to sign up for monthly contributions, share the campaign widely, and help raise awareness.
