The ANC Youth League of Ward 20 in Mdantsane did their bit for Mandela Day by spending time with Nomzwakhe Hlobo, 73, in Mdantsane Unit P.
Hlobo is physically challenged and has been living in a dilapidated house since 2012 as reported in The GO! & Express previously reported (“All Hlobo wants is a home” June 21).
“We decided to help out by painting the house, replacing the doors, windows, kitchen cabins, wardrobes, doing her laundry and making an accessible path for her wheelchair, as her lawn is affected by malfunctioning underground water pipes that flood her house and yard,” ANCYL chairperson Lwando Pisane said.
Pisane said there were 62 young people from their ward who made a difference in Hlobo’s life on Mandela Day.
“This is an ongoing project for us because we are planning on fencing her house in the near future,”
“We are doing this as ubuntu, by giving back to the community. Our mission is not to tell people which political organisation they can support, but ours is to help the people of the community,” Pisane said.
He said SUPERSPAR in Qumza Highway in Mdantsane donated groceries on Tuesday and Build It was willing to donate some more building essentials.
“I am at a loss for words because of what these young people did for me,” an excited Hlobo said.
