Dear residents of East London
THE Catholic Order of the Knights of da Gama wish to say a big thank you to the citizens of Buffalo City who so generously support our “Collect a Can – Feed the Hungry” project every month at the two collection points.
On the second Saturday of the month, the Knights collect food at Ashmel Spar in Berea and on the last Saturday of the month, at Spargs Super Spar in Beacon Bay.
For the period January to December 2016 a total of 3158 tins were collected at Ashmel and 3756 at Spargs – totalling 6914 at an average cost of R12.00 per tin = R82968.
Soft goods collected totaled 184 packets, this is a Spar packet filled with soft goods like tea, sugar, rice, biscuits, etc. at an average cost of R120 per packet = R22080.
For those who forget to buy a tin or some other item, we also have a small cash box for cash donations and these totaled R14147.
The total cost of this project was thus R119 169. We also received a generous donation of clothing from Berklee @ Berea over the same period that amounted to R15 702. From our food collection we were able to pack 924 food parcels during this period.
The project is now in its 22nd year and the ongoing support from the patrons that shop at these two outlets has been phenomenal. Thank you once again, citizens of Buffalo City.
