In response to violent threats made during the recent protest by the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), the DA is looking to press charges against those responsible.
“The time has now come for Samwu to also feel the full might of the law,” said DA EC premier campaign spokesperson on basic services Keven Mileham.
The threats referred to occurred last Tuesday when strikers disrupted a special council meeting in the city hall. In addressing the strikers, BCM Samwu campaigns convener Zola Capucapu declared, “We will now activate amaphara [thugs].”
According to Mileham, this constitutes an incitement to violence.
“The DA has already proposed that the municipality suspend and discipline all workers involved in the illegal strike,” he said.
Samwu had not responded to a request for comment to developments by the time of going to print.
