Gale force winds leave trail of destruction

Powerful gale force winds left many members of the Zwelitsha community distraught last week after their houses and businesses were severely damaged.

Resident Mbulelo Ntanda, who rents a flat behind the house of fellow resident Bukiwe Talbert, says he watched in horror as the wind tore into both his flat and Talbert’s house.

According to Ntanda, the winds managed to demolish a room of the main building and managed to pull down parts of the ceiling. Luckily, no one was injured.

The total damage was estimated at R40,000.

Another resident, Mxolisi Cangci, had his garage destroyed to the tune of about R2,000. Cangci was out of town with his family at the time. so there were no injuries.

Another victim, of the wind was Debebe Haile who rents a room from local businessman Vukile Puti, said the strong winds managed to demolish the roof and the ceiling of the room and spaza shop owned by Puti.

He said he had informed Puti of the damage but by the time of going to print, attempts to get a comment were unsuccessful.
