The Breidbach community hall was filled with excitement after staff from Charteris & Barnes CC spent their 67 minutes for Mandela Day entertaining senior citizens from the Breidbach Seniors Club members.
The group of about 30 senior citizens were treated to refreshments and a delicious cake, as well as received with gift packs.
Speaking on behalf of Charteris, Juante Lewis said the refreshments and gift packs were contributed by the company and the cake was donated by local business Nicks Daily.
“For the past few years, we have spent our 67 minutes for Mandela Day giving to mostly daycare centres in underprivileged communities in and around King William’s Town. We have also donated to King SPCA previously.
“However, this year we decided to give back to our senior citizens and collectively decided on Breidbach Seniors Club,” said Lewis said.
Club founding member Lydia Grewe, 70, commended the visitors’ kindness and generosity.
“We as the elderly always see fault and are used to complaining about today’s youth but this occasion today has totally changed that perception,” Grewe said.
“Your actions of kindness and Ubuntu have inspired us today and we are extremely thankful.”
Club secretary Elizabeth Williams also expressed words of gratitude.
Sanco ward 44 branch secretary Stacey Gosling was also in attendance and described the occasion as an “absolutely blessed day”.
“We want to thank Charteris & Barnes, the director and staff for choosing to spend their 67 minutes for Madiba with the elderly of Breidbach.
“I’m blessed and honoured to have witnessed it,” said Gosling said.
