The letter to the editor in the Go October 28 refers:
The business owner who wrote the letter is completely justified in expressing his frustration about the levels of filth and degradation surrounding his business in Milner Road as that unacceptable situation must have a negative impact on his business.
While BCMM are partly to blame for the dirty, unkempt environment in the area, the institution does do weekly waste collections; it is the residents who dump indiscriminately wherever and whenever they choose, as well as the vagrants who rip open the rubbish bags and leave behind a mess who are mostly to blame.
It is, however, an indictment on BCMM that this business owner has struggled to raise the issue with the authority because telephones go unanswered or the phone numbers published by the institution are out of date.
I do need to point out that his business is located in Ward 1 and not Ward 3. It is therefore the responsibility of the elected ward councillor to meet with the business owner to discuss the way forward regarding the issues he raises, as a once-off clean-up of the area is not the long-term solution that is needed.
In the interim, I have met with him and given him the contact details of his respective councillor and have also reported the general filth in Milner Road to the solid waste directorate.
