Bruce Willis has built a reputation for himself as an actor who has starred in many action films over the years.
After an unfortunate diagnosis of dementia, his career has come to an end with his last film, Assassin.
The plot seems simple on a surface level. When a revolutionary, experimental human drone technology falls into enemy hands, it is up to Vlamora (Willis), leader of an elite CIA group, and his team to draft Alexa (Nomzamo Mbatha) a former black-ops soldier into service to retrieve the weapons system at any cost.
Alexa is also trying to find the truth about the mission that left her husband in a coma.
Mbatha is one of SA’s most famous acting exports and seeing her act alongside Willis is a proud moment.
The few action scenes that she stars in a show that she has a talent for hardcore physical performances; however, her other scenes feel as though something is missing.
Though Mbatha is a pleasure to watch on screen, her portrayal of the desperate wife is not as convincing as it could be.
The opening scene features Mbatha holding a gun to Willis’s head.
This sets the film up to be exciting and intriguing, but that is far as the excitement goes.
The storyline is confusing, and the audience is left with more questions than answers by the end of the film.
The film provides very little by way of a backstory and the suspense seems to go nowhere.
Willis’s character hardly seems like he is important to the story. It feels like he is just playing a cameo role.
If you’re a fan of any of Willis’s other 130+ films, or if you’re interested in watching Mbatha’s performance, Assassin would be worth the watch.
However, if you’re looking for something to fulfil your love of action or thriller movies, this is probably not the one for you.
