Nicole Fisher is a model and beauty pageant contestant who is set to compete for the Miss MIA (Modelling in Africa) International 2023 title in Cameroon later this year.
The local philanthropist, who hails from Garcia Flats in Cambridge, aims to use her role as a top 15 finalist as a platform to motivate young girls to follow their passions, no matter what.
“I am very excited about this opportunity. I have always loved beauty pageants and modeling since I was a little girl. I believe that beauty pageants are great for teaching girls to build their confidence in themselves.
“I used to have issues with my body. I always thought I was too skinny, but now that I’ve been modeling, I’ve found that I have grown in confidence,” Fisher said.
The Miss MIA International contest is an annual pageant aimed at giving a platform to contestants from English-speaking African countries.
Ten countries have been chosen to take part in a contest, which will see them showcase their beauty in Africanism.
Fisher has struggled over the last few years to find a beauty pageant to enter due to the fact that she has a child. Most pageants, including Miss SA, have a clause that prohibits women who have had children from entering the competition.
Fisher was drawn to the Miss MIA International pageant because it does not have this clause.
One of the key requirements for the contestants is for the contestants to take part in charity and be active participants in the upliftment of their community.
Fisher has dedicated her online social media platforms to creating a safe and positive space for young girls — an interest motivated by her experiences as a mother.
“I want to help the girls in my community because many of them come from homes where the parents are not as hands-on and involved in their lives. Some of them are in desperate need of necessities like sanitary pads, soap, deodorants, and the like.
“That is where I come in. I know I cannot change the world, but I can try and help one step at a time,” said Fisher.
Fisher is in the process of registering an NPO called Growth4Girls, an organization that will focus on assisting, empowering, and motivating girls through the various stages of life.
Fisher will hand over sanitary products to local schools on April 25-26. She also hopes to create distractions for young children, in the form of extracurricular activities, through her organization.
