Quiz Lady is a fun, enjoyable comedy that explores the relationship of two sisters with different lives coming together for a common goal.
Quiet and introverted Anne (played by Awkwafina) must team up with her chaotic and carefree sister Jenny (played by Sandra Oh) to help pay off their mother’s gambling debts.
When Anne’s beloved dog, Mr Linguini, is kidnapped, they set off on a cross-country journey to get the money they need.
To do so, they use Anne’s quiz knowledge and skills to win the prize money.
Both Awkwafina and Oh shine in comedic roles and their performances turn the movie into a hit with an original plot, a solid cast, and high levels of relatability.
This is one of Oh’s first attempts in comedy and she does so well, making her an actress worth looking out for in more comedic roles.
Awkwafina’s portrayal as game-show-obsessed Annie is realistic and relatable, as many of us have at some point imagined ourselves a guest on our favourite game show.
The sister dynamic is fun to watch and many of the conversations they have are familiar to anyone with siblings.
Sometimes the younger sister is more responsible and focused, while the older sister is more carefree and fun.
It was heartwarming to see them come together and recognise each other’s sacrifices in their family and embrace each other’s differences.
Will Ferrell also shines in his supporting role game show host, Terry McTeer, and somehow finds a good balance as a funny yet serious character.
The two leads have great chemistry and carry the film well, except for a few missed moments where the humour feels forced, and slightly racist.
Quiz Lady is hardly an Oscar-worthy film, but it’s worth a watch if you’re just looking for some light, wholesome comedy.
Quiz Lady is available for streaming on Hulu.
