Collins progresses from opening act to lead star: Win tickets to comedian’s one-man show on our social media

Many years ago, comedian Robby Collins was the opening act for Trevor Noah at the Guild Theatre and in the intervening years, Collins has become a nationally acclaimed comedian in his own standing and is returning to the Guild Theatre stage this September with a new side-splitting show.

Collins is on a national tour, debuting his new show, ‘Come as You Are’ and in just over a month he will be performing for fans in East London — a city he says has had a special place in his heart since his debut here.

“East London audiences are always great. They’re always hungry for comedy and a good show. I’ve been back here a few times, it’s always good to come back. East London has the same energy as Gqeberha and I love coming back because the people are just so amazing,” Collins said.

Collins has built a strong career and has cemented himself as a hilarious performer who wields satire and irony into funny yet interesting and observational takes on politics, current affairs and world events.

“I make comedy for open-minded people. I am coloured, but I don’t make comedy for coloured people. I don’t speak on behalf of anyone.

“I only speak from my own experience and perspectives,” Collins said.

In addition to Noah, Collins has been the opening act for great SA comedians such as Marc Lottering, Eugene Khoza, John Vlismas and Kagiso Lediga.

In 2013, Collins debuted his one-man show, That Bushman’s Crazy, which won the Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda in 2014.

He has also established himself as an actor, starring in shows like Rhythm City, Scandal! and Rockville.

“Comedy is always changing. My comedy is about everything happening around me.

“I started working on this tour soon after the elections, but so much has happened in our country since then, so the show is always different.

“One thing I appreciate about South Africans is that we have a unique sense of humour and can find the humour in any situation. We are a problematic and beautiful country,” he said.

The comedy show will take place on Saturday September 28 at 8pm at the Guild Theatre. Tickets are available on Computicket and with the GO!&Express you stand a chance to win tickets to Collins’ show by keeping an eye on our social media in the weeks to come.
