The story of detective Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous stories written, with multiple different portrayals of his character since he was first introduced in Scottish writer Arthur Conan Doyle’s books back in the 1800s.
Holmes’ trusted sidekick Dr John Watson’s story is not as widely known but it is certainly just as important.
The new series follows Watson, as he resumes his medical career at a clinic dedicated to the treatment of rare diseases. Prior to opening the clinic, Watson witnessed the death of his best friend Holmes at the hands of his nemesis Moriarty (Randall Park).
Watson hires a team of young medical professionals who assist him in solving medical mysteries each episode.
Watson leads his team with his expertise and vast medical knowledge, all while dealing with a concussion, and missing gaps in his memory.
Morris Chestnut in the role of Watson is a perfect casting as he brings to light a refreshing and modern take on the classic character.
Watson and his estranged wife, Dr Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes), are the highlights of the show. Morstan is the director at the hospital where the Holmes Clinic is housed, and Chestnut and Aytes have fantastic chemistry despite their characters’ differing methods of operation. The tension around the couple’s past relationship adds a different tension to the medical drama.
The show follows a format that will be intriguing to viewers who enjoy medical as well as investigative dramas. Each episode focuses on revealing details about each character and their backgrounds, allowing viewers to get to know them at a steady pace.
The plotline involving Moriarty is also an interesting one, as there are many clues indicating that his conflict with Watson is deep and will play an important part in the story as the series continues.
Unfortunately, there are many parts of the show that resemble already existing shows such as House M.D. and Rosewood.
Watson is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
