A group of dedicated knitters from Hands On has extended a warm gesture of kindness by donating handmade blankets to the McClelland Adult Centre for the Intellectually Impaired. The donation is part of the group’s ongoing efforts to use their craft to bring comfort to those in need.

Hands On, a social group that meets every Wednesday morning, was founded in 2009 and has since created countless knitted and crocheted items for orphanages, old age homes, and community organisations. The group operates with a simple philosophy — knitting with love.

Group co-ordinator Toni Krull said the group preferred to remain out of the spotlight, and allow their work to have a lasting impact on those people that they interact with.

“We are a social group who gather to knit and crochet with love. Many of us are pensioners, so we rely on donations of wool to continue giving to those who need it most,” Krull said.

Centre operations manager Gus Dreyer said the residents and staff appreciated the gesture.

“The blankets will come in handy as we’re going into winter, and it gets colder. It helps to have additional blankets,” Dreyer said.

The group’s generosity is not limited to blankets; members also knit jerseys, beanies, and booties, ensuring that various charities receive much-needed winter essentials.

While McClelland Adult Centre had not received a donation from them in some time, the group felt it was the right moment to extend their support again.

“This is an ongoing project, and we hope that those who receive our gifts of warmth feel the love and care that has gone into every stitch,” Krull said.

Apart from their weekly knitting sessions, Hands On also hosts an art and craft gathering every Thursday for those who enjoy working with colour in different creative ways. The group welcomes beginners and encourages anyone interested in learning more to join their sessions.

Through their selfless efforts, Hands On continues to show that small acts of kindness can have a big impact.

Their commitment to bringing warmth, both literally and emotionally, to others is a testament to the power of community and compassion.
