The results are in and Stirling High School’s Alex Raath and Damien Salzwedel have scooped A++ awards in the 2025 National Arts Association Teatro Eisteddfod.
With thousands of participants, the eisteddfod is one of SA’s largest performing arts competitions.
This year, 4,200 pupils from across the country demonstrated their prowess in music, drama, and theatre during May and June in hopes of earning coveted distinction awards.
Alex brought home A++ which is 90% for his rendition of Ed Sheeran’s Photograph in the vocal pop category. His performance was noted by judges as technically brilliant and heartfelt.
He never imagined he would earn a score this high and credits his vocal coach, Rory McLaren for believing in his capacity to master this difficult song.
The award is confirmation to Alex that music is his calling, despite the judgment he has received for it in the past. From as young as he can remember he was always singing, playing instruments, and attending concerts.
Though he was bullied for his single-minded interest in music, he remained committed to it and years later, this national award is a reward for his resilience.
Alex said: “First and foremost, all glory goes to God, as this award has reignited my belief in greater things.
“People used to mock me for doing music, but as my youth pastor Siphiwo Mchunu says, ‘People only think something’s cringe until it works.’
“Achieving this is a confidence booster and proof that no matter what people say — you should never give up.”
Alex is excited to continue pursuing music after school and says he is indebted to the unwavering support from family, friends and peers who never doubted his capabilities.
He added: “To anyone who has been told they cannot achieve something; do not listen. Trust God and reach for the stars because the sky’s the limit.”
Damien was awarded A++ which is 94% for his monologue from Athol Fugard’s acclaimed 1980’s play, Master Harold and the Boys. Damien’s masterful handing of the complex character of Hally was commended by judges for the depth of its emotional maturity.
His preparation included extensive line work and character development with the guidance of his drama teacher, Mrs Van Den Berg and the other educators in the department.
Last year he achieved an A++ in the Buffalo City Eisteddfod and never expected to replicate this success on his debut entry into a national contest like Teatro Eisteddfod.
Damien said: “This was my first national-level competition, and to be recognised on this scale was thrilling.
“I’ve loved drama since grade 1, and it’s grown into a real passion.
“I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved. East London does not have many competitions like this, so discovering Teatro Arts Eisteddfod was exciting because it allowed me to showcase my talent more broadly.”
His preparations with the SHS drama department for Buffalo City Eisteddfod in August are already underway and he is excited to add more distinctions to his arsenal.
SHS spokesperson Candi Ferreira said: “We are proud of Damian and Alex in their efforts, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth in the arts.”
