The Inter-Districts Prestige Swimming Gala took place on Saturday at the Joan Harrison Swimming Pools with Buffalo City Aquatics (BCA) competing against Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics, Eden Aquatics and Cape Town Metro Aquatics.

“This event started many years ago. It used to be a provincial event, but then turned to an inter-district. “To participate, the swimmer has to meet a certain qualification time,” Eastern Cape Aquatics president Stephen Haswell said.

He said Free State were no longer participating in the gala due to logistical problems but they were hoping to come back at a later date.

“Each of the four districts holds its own championship gala and from that event the participants get are selected to compete in the inter-district gala,” Haswell said.

BCA president Lionel Poovan said there were approximately 70 swimmers that represented the district.

“Our swimmers prepare themselves at their private clubs, which fall under BCA, and they then practise there. We then hold swimming galas where we select the best teams that are going to represent BCA at competitions,” Poovan said.

“We have really built a good foundation in the aquatic fraternity. I just want to say well done to our board for putting this gala together and making it such a prestigious event.” he said.
