BCM recently staged an U19 soccer tournament at the Victoria Grounds in King William’s Town.
“Our aim is to choose 20 boys for the Qonce Local Football Association squad for the upcoming Mayor Cup,” coach Zolani Gqibitole said.
The Mayor Cup is an annual sporting event hosted by BCM that features U19 teams involved in a variety of different codes such as soccer, netball, volleyball, table tennis, boxing, and rugby.
Gqibitole said BCM needed to work hard to build a strong U19 squad and improve football in the area.
BCM sport manager Manelisi Lwana labelled the event a success and said this was a good sign for the tournament to come.
Players chosen for the final squad included:
- Terobo Ndibaza
- Aphelele Velem
- Buhle Madikane
- Kamva Gqibitole
- Thubalethu Pilapi
- Sibabalo Mposi
“The team is expected to play next at Orlando Stadium on June 15 and at Jan Smuts Stadium on June 22,” said Lwana.
One parent who preferred to stay remain anonymous praised the tournament and said sport was an important tool in keeping children safe.
“Our government must keep supporting all sport codes because some of our kids are victims of drugs and thieves,” he said.
